Medigap covers the 20%
Medicare doesn't.

Original Medicare leaves you with deductibles, the Hospital (Part A) coinsurance, and 20% of every Part B charge — with no out-of-pocket maximum. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan picks up most or all of that. It's the more expensive route up front, but it makes your medical costs predictable for the rest of your life.

The plan letters — A through N

Medigap plans are standardized. A Plan G from one carrier covers the same benefits as a Plan G from another carrier — only the price differs. The most popular plans for new enrollees today are Plan G (covers nearly everything except the small Doctor coverage (Part B) deductible) and Plan N (slightly cheaper, with small office-visit copays).

Plans C and F are no longer available to people newly eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020 — if you've heard about them from a relative, that's why.

The 6-month rule

You have a 6-month window starting the month you turn 65 AND are enrolled in Part B during which you can buy ANY Medigap plan from ANY carrier with no medical underwriting. Outside that window, carriers can ask health questions and decline you. Connecticut has stronger protections than many states — but the cleanest path is to do this within 6 months of enrolling in Doctor coverage (Part B).

If you delayed Doctor coverage because you had employer coverage past 65, your 6-month Medigap window starts when you finally enroll in Doctor coverage. We'll help you time it.

Why we like Medigap for shoreline retirees

Madison and Old Saybrook clients in particular often spend part of the year in Florida or visiting kids out of state. Medigap travels with you anywhere a doctor accepts Medicare — which is most of the country. Medicare Advantage networks don't.

What does Medigap cost?

Premiums vary by plan letter, carrier, age, and (in some states) gender and health status. For a 65-year-old in Connecticut, a typical Plan G runs roughly $150–$220/month. Plan N runs roughly $115–$180. These are illustrative ranges — not quotes. We'll quote you specifically.

Premiums increase with age and inflation. Worth it if you value predictability.

Medigap doesn't include prescription drugs

If you go Original + Medigap, you also need a stand-alone prescription drug plan (Part D). Read about prescription drug coverage.
